God and Adam
God created the heavens and the earth, the fish in the sea, and the animals around the world. Then God created Adam. Adam is different from all the other creatures. Adam has a soul, a mind to reason, a heart with feelings. Genesis 1:26a Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness”. So who is us and our in this verse? Throughout the bible God is called Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The three are referred to as the Trinity. We’ll talk about the trinity later. This is a bit confusing, so as a human who has limited thinking. I can only tell you what the bible says. “God is love” (I John 4:16).
Genesis 2:7-9 “Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being”. God placed Adam in the garden of Eden. The garden had every kind of trees, and everything was pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. vs15 “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” The first command from God was to Adam. vs16-17 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die”.
God brought the wild animals and birds to Adam to name. The animals were friendly, roaming free, not mean and ferocious. Isaiah 11:6 says, “The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will live with the goat, the calf will live with the lion, and the yearling together, and a little child will lead them”. This is a reference of what life will be like in the new heaven and the new earth at the end of time. Sin had not entered the world and everything was perfect.
Adam had all the animals but was alone. The animals were friendly, roaming free. Sin had not entered the world, and everything was perfect. Gen 2:21 “So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was asleep, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh”. God made a woman from the rib.
Side note: God took a rib from Adam’s side. Which means in God’s eye man and women are equals. God is not a male chauvinist expecting women to walk three steps behind her husband. God is not a feminist believing women should be head of the men. God put man and woman side-by-side, partners, equals.
God intended one man and one woman to be paired together for life. The marriage union is an example of what God wants with his church (the people who love him). Throughout the bible you will hear the church called the bride. Jesus is the groom. We’ll talk about this later.
Adam and Eve walked with God in the garden. God talked with them. God loved them. They had a good relationship with God. God provide everything they needed. They were naked and unashamed. Their relationship with God was pure and holy.
